What should we buy?

Shopping for RVs can be daunting.  Travel trailer, 5th Wheel, Class A, B, C, Super C, there’s a lot to consider.  Later in 2017, about November, there was a local RV show, so we went to look.  I think from the very beginning we were mostly interested in Class A, but wanted to make sure we weren’t missing something.

June 1998 – Silver Strand State Beach, San Diego

We had owned a Class A about 20 years before when we still lived in Arizona. It was a 1987, 27 foot Winnebago. We only used it on weekends or holidays. It was a beast, but never failed us.

We looked at everything at the show and still came away thinking Class A, but 5th Wheels were a close second.  After that, we attended several RV shows including the Tampa Supershow in January 2018.

Tiffin Phaeton 44OH

Wow, have things changed in 20 years. Washer & dryer, inductive cook tops, dishwasher, 4 TV’s, king size beds are all available now. The incredible amount of space manufacturers create plus the comfortable interiors make full-time RVing something we never dreamed of back in the 90’s. Oh, and slide outs. Those didn’t exist in 1987…

All in all, we visited 7 RV shows and 4 dealers in Florida trying to narrow down our choices. Our first favorites were the Fleetwood Discovery LXE series and American Coach Revolution. As we went along we discovered both Tiffin and then Newmar.

Newmar Ventana 4369

The Newmar Ventana is an impressive coach with high build quality. We liked it a lot. But as we looked more, Tiffin began to win out. A combination of the same high build quality, attention to detail, better storage, and more advanced technology won us over.

We took advantage of a road trip across America in the summer of 2018 to stop by Red bay, Alabama and take the Tiffin factory tour. It was probably the best factory tour we’ve ever taken. I’ll post another article later with many more pictures and factory info.

So, our decision was made. Class A from Tiffin. But what model? What options? That would take a few more months to figure out. Plus, we had a house to sell…
